Our focus at the Hogan School is to provide quality dance instruction to create well-rounded dancers. We seek to develop dancers with a vast knowledge of Irish dance fundamentals in both competition and performance. We provide an atmosphere which values and emphasizes form, technique, presentation, team spirit, and creative choreography. We also encourage participation in a variety of dance events and experiences including competitions, shows, workshops, and dance camps. We endeavor to have our students take pride in their efforts and strive to reach their full potential. As we believe that a solid foundation is created through mastery of the basics, students are expected to meet rigorous standards in order to progress through the levels. These standards allow students to experience the joy which results from hard work and dedication, and also ensure they are prepared to meet the challenges of each new level with confidence.
The Hogan School of Irish Dance is the only certified Irish dancing school in North Central Florida, serving Gainesville, Ocala, Williston, Jonesville, High Springs, Lake City, and the surrounding areas. Certification in Irish Dance instruction is obtained through a selective examination process, which guarantees that your teacher has an extensive background in Irish dance, mastery in a range of skill sets, and the ability to teach dancers up to the highest champion level. As a certified school, our students are sanctioned to register in nationally and internationally accredited feiseanna (competitions). Dancers from the Hogan school have reached the highest levels of competition success, with numerous top 5 and top 10 placements at Regional, National, and International championships including the World Championships, All Ireland Championship, Great Britain Championship, and North American Nationals. While some of our dancers choose to compete, it is not required, and we have many dancers who dance recreationally. The Hogan School’s reputation for quality dancing ensures that we are first to be called to accompany Celtic music and dance superstars when they are performing locally — The Chieftains, Eileen Ivers, Leahy, Cherish the Ladies, Danu, The Step Crew, and Celtic Nights to name a few.
Of course, we welcome you to observe our classes, talk with parents of current students, and attend our performances to witness firsthand the difference a quality and experienced instructor makes!
Allison Hogan, TCRG
Allison has been involved in the Irish Dance community for 30 years, including 20 years of teaching experience. She started Irish dancing lessons with family friends at the age of 5, joining the Butler school in Tampa (FL) at the age of 10 to train under Sheila Butler-Duffy ADCRG, and Jimmy Erwin, both former pupils of the legendary dance master Cyril McNiff, and members of the “McNiff Irish Dancers” troupe. Allison enjoyed many successes as a solo and team dancer with the Butler School, competing at the regional, national, and world levels. She began assisting her teacher while a championship dancer before eventually opening her own school. As the instructor for the Hogan School, she now imparts her love of Irish dance, music, culture, and tradition to students of all ages in the Gainesville area. Allison is a fully accredited teacher, receiving her qualifications from the Irish Dance Commission, An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha, in Dublin, Ireland in 2006.
Having moved to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida, Allison graduated summa cum laude (highest honors) with bachelor’s degrees in both Linguistics and Communication Sciences and Disorders. In 2008 she completed her Master’s in speech-language pathology, and practiced as a pediatric speech-language pathologist until 2015, when she decided to commit herself full-time to teaching dance. Allison is also mother to a 10-year-old son with a keen interest in sports, who, while not a dancer himself, enjoys rooting for our school at competitions!
